Thank you for being willing to consider adoption. It has been a huge blessing in our lives, and we know without a doubt that our Father in Heaven is very much involved in adoption. We want you to know that we're willing to have an open adoption and open relationship with you.

We promise to love and cherish your baby. He/she will have 2 big brothers that will always look out for and protect and love him/her. We promise that we will make education an important part of your child's life. We will set up an education (and/or mission) fund as soon as its possible, so that when the time comes the financial part will be taken care of. How it all started

We met through mutual friends when Kyle moved to Oregon in May of 1998 to attend school. We dated a few months and got engaged on October 23rd (Kyle's birthday).

We were married July 23, 1999 in the Portland Oregon temple.

Over the next few years we both finished school, passed board exams, got our first "real" jobs, bought our first house, and decided it was time to start our family. Months turned into years as we looked to test results and fertility doctors for answers as to why it wasn't happening. We decided at that point we were going to pursue IVF, but after doing all the labs and attending classes, we both felt very strongly that this wasn't what we were supposed to do. The very next day we called the adoption agency and felt peace in our hearts as we started down a new path.

Kaden's adoption story.

We were living in Oregon when we adopted Kaden. In January of 2005, we came home from Florida (and a failed adoption) feeling pretty sad and discouraged. It was exactly a month later that we were matched with another birth mom (who happened to be from Florida!). We got to talk with her on the phone, and got to know her a little bit. We made a plan to be at the hospital when the baby was born, on or around March 17th. Kaden had other ideas though, and decided to come a month early.

On February 17th, Kyle had worked all day, and then had driven up to Seattle to be there for business meetings the next day. Around 8pm I got a call from our case worker who said, "You're having a baby tonight...you'd better get to Utah!" I was FREAKED OUT (in a good way). We had nothing packed, the laundry wasn't done, we weren't going to make it before the baby came, and Kyle was in another state! YIKES. Kyle decided to drive home from Seattle and that gave me a chance to get stuff done at home. I picked him up in Portland, and away we went. We drove all night, and got to the hospital the next day.

We spent the next couple of days at the hospital with Kaden and his birth mom.

Placement day.

We didn't go to court to finalize Kaden's adoption. In Oregon, the judge signed the paperwork, and it was done.

We love Kaden's birth mom and are so grateful that Kaden's in our family! It took us 5 1/2 years to have children in our home, but he was worth the wait! Kaden's birth mom wanted a pretty closed adoption after meeting us and the delivery. We continue to send her letters and pictures, but never have heard from her since placement.

In September of 2008 we went in for a quick update with our new caseworker at the agency. She stepped out for a minute, and came back with blue balloons, a teddy bear, and a sweet letter from a birth mom saying that she'd chosen us to be the family for her baby boy. We were so excited!

Kyle and I had met at the agency, so were in two separate cars. We both started calling everyone we knew to share the good news. My parents happened to be moving to Utah that day, and we made them stop at Wendy's so we could meet them there and tell them the news in person.

Kaden was pretty excited about having a new baby join our family. He wanted to help get everything ready.

We were finally able to meet Bosten birth mom (and her parents) a couple of weeks later. It was a great meeting, and we both had lots of questions for each other. We loved her immediately!

After our first meeting, we emailed regularly and met for dinner. Then, the wait was on. Finally, she emailed that she was going to be induced on Monday, October 27th. It was a long day of waiting, but we finally got the phone call. He was here!

An hour before placement, we got a phone call that there had been "developments". Its a long story, but the birth father decided to cause some drama and it had to be figured out before he could come home. It was a long 10 days (and we visited him everyday) and finally he could come home!

The drama continued for almost a year regarding Bosten's adoption. It was a hard time, but we knew he was supposed to be in our family, and that all would be well eventually.

Finally, it was time to finalize! It was such a happy day! The judge let us take pictures with him, and even let Kaden bang his gavel and say, "Order in the court!" So fun.

We have a very OPEN adoption with Bosten's birth mom (and her family). We email regularly, send pictures, and see them occasionally. We're grateful for them and for their support of our family! We love them and are privileged to have them as an extension of our family.

Adoption.

We love adoption and how we have been blessed by the miracles of adoption! Adoption has always been such an important word in our family! My (Shelby's) dad and aunt were adopted. We believe that choosing adoption is a personal and complicated one, both for birth parents and adoptive families. It brings people together and creates relationships that would never come about in any other situation. Adoption is a beautiful process that allows the Lord to create families in a very unique way. It has been an answer to our prayers and we have no doubt that the Lord is very much involved in placing babies with families. Our two experiences have been amazing and we have such love and respect for our boys' birth mothers. We love our kids SO MUCH and we want them to have siblings. We wish for them to be (somewhat) close in age so that they'll have the opportunity to grow up together and be best friends.
